Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) Surgery Minimally invasive – ReLEx SMILE in comparison to LASIK Carl Zeiss VisuMax is revolutionary in refractive surgery. With SMILE, only one small incision - smaller than the flap hinge in LASIK - is adequate to remove the refractive lenticule. SMILE is therefore able to deliver minimally invasive refractive correction.

Side-cut area up to 80% reduction In LASIK, a side-cut of roughly 20 mm circumference has to be created, whereas in SMILE, only a small incision of less than 4 mm is sufficient. This allow the majority of the superficial corneal layers to remain untouched. Because fewer corneal nerves are transacted, there are less dry eye syndrome after SMILE.

No flap-related complications A minimally invasive incision can further reduce the risk of infection, epithelial ingrowth or other flap-related complications - and allow the cornea to heal much more quickly.
